Coherent Breathing Meditation


Coherent breathing, also known as resonance breathing, has roots in various ancient practices, including yoga and pranayama from India, where breath control has been used for thousands of years to achieve mental clarity and physical well-being. The modern conceptualization of this technique, however, can be traced back to the late 20th century when researchers began exploring the physiological effects of controlled breathing patterns. The term “coherent breathing” was popularized by Stephen Elliott in the early 2000s, emphasizing its potential to bring about coherence between heart rhythms, brain waves, and respiratory patterns.

The health benefits of coherent breathing are extensive. By establishing a rhythmic pattern of inhaling for five seconds and exhaling for five seconds, this practice enhances the balance between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems, leading to reduced stress levels and improved mental health. Studies suggest that it can lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety, improve sleep quality, and even boost immune function. Furthermore, this technique can enhance heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of cardiovascular health, by promoting a more adaptive heart rhythm. This synchronization not only aids in relaxation but also supports cognitive functions like attention and emotional regulation, making coherent breathing a holistic approach to health that impacts both mind and body.
